Abstract:
This study investigated the anti-hyperlipidemic effect of ethanol extract of Zingiber officinale (ginger) on male Wistar albino rats induced with inflammation. Thirty rats were divided into five groups: blank control, negative control, standard control, low-dose treated, and high-dose treated groups. Lipid parameters including total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) were analyzed. Results showed that the negative control group had markedly elevated total cholesterol (85.284 ± 0.001mg/dl), triglycerides (104.093 ± 0.004mg/dl), HDL (30.56 ± 0.001mg/dl), and LDL (21.806 ± 0.003mg/dl) compared to the blank control (40.274 ± 0.001, 90.543 ± 0.004, 4.56 ± 0.002, and 5.215 ± 0.005mg/dl respectively), confirming lipid derangements due to inflammation. Administration of Zingiber officinale extract produced a significant improvement in lipid profile. The high-dose group reduced total cholesterol (69.109 ± 0.001mg/dl) and LDL (15.178 ± 0.003mg/dl) levels close to the blank control, while also lowering triglycerides (94.387 ± 0.004mg/dl) compared to the negative control. Both low- and high-dose treatments significantly reduced HDL compared to the negative control but remained higher than the blank control. These findings suggest that Zingiber officinale ethanol extract exerts a protective effect against inflammation-induced dyslipidemia by lowering total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL, thereby supporting its potential role as a natural antihyperlipidemic agent.
