Abstract:
The international financial reporting standards (IFRS) have greatly contributed to the global financial reporting framework in the creation and presentation of financial statements outside the national boundaries. The IFRS was designed by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) to enhance transparency, accountability, comparability and uniformity in financial reporting. This article critically examines the implications of IFRS adoption on the integrity of financial reporting, international comparability and investors trust. The paper discusses the impact of IFRS on corporate reporting behavior, disclosure, measurement and accounting recognition. It is a conceptual examination of the accounting procedures and the existing academic literature. The implementation of IFRS is said to enhance the quality of financial reporting by strengthening the disclosure requirements, decreasing the likelihood of some types of earnings manipulation and boosting the usability of accounting information for decision-making. And, uniform reporting standards can facilitate cross border investment, allowing investors to make comparisons between companies in various nations. But these benefits don’t come automatically. The effectiveness of IFRS implementation may be hampered by differences in institutional frameworks, motivations of managers, quality of auditing and professional knowledge. The essay also highlights challenges faced by rising economies such as the inability to apply professional judgment, lack of adequate technical capability, and the high cost of implementation. The research concludes that the effectiveness of IFRS is determined not only by the quality of accounting standards, but also by the institutional conditions that allow their adoption. For the adoption of IFRS to result in meaningful gains in investor trust and quality of reporting, good corporate governance, professional education, independent audits and strong enforcement are required.
